Tim, Still running the original sgl barrel with manual choke. I'll check and make sure PO didn't adjust the cable incorrectly. Although I don't think it's a choke issue as it runs fine once started.

Are you referring to your 1954 hydra-matic? The original carb had a manifold-heated automatic choke and a complicated throttle/transmission linkage. Maybe these complications are adding to the quandary?
Regarding Sweet's pertinent question, in your first post it looks like you indicate that the engine is cranking OK when it is warmed-up?
