OK, so I checked some of the things....
1. Took carb off base and confirmed hole\passage thru gasket to manifold.
2. Confirmed I was getting a good squirt into carb when I pulled throttle back.
3. Checked timing with gun. Found the timing to be well advanced beyond the mark, but could not keep truck running or start it when I tried to bring it back into time by turning the distributor.
3. Timing was checked with the vacuum advance plugged, although I saw no noticeable difference in idle speed when it was disconnected\reconnected.

I'm thinking I need to start back to square one with the timing. I have a definite miss at idle, and there is still the issue of running rough under load. I hate to think about this, as it is difficult to find top dead center with one person doing the work!
