The speedo/odometer in my '46 doesn't work. I disconnected the cable at the dash and went for a drive and noticed the speedo cable was not spinning. I disconnectd the speedo cable at the speedo-gear at the tranny and it turns freely by hand. I then removed the speedo-gear and placed the speedo-gear and cable on the workbench and hooked them up. Turning the 12-tooth gear made the cable spin. I then stuck my finger in the hole, couldn't resist
, and felt for the drive gear inside the tranny. Well, it not only freely turned, the gear also moved slightly back and forth. Since the drive gear is supposed to be linked to the tranny, I am assuming it should not move at all. So, to tighten it, do I have to remove the tranny and open it up? Is the gear just loose and only needs to be tightened? Is it stripped and needs replaced? Anyone out there had any experience with this? Although my truck is stock and not a hot-rod, I would like to know how "fast" I am going when I get to the numerous "School Zones" scattered about San Antonio.
