A good pair of vise grips or a pipe wrench will get the dowels out just fine. They are threaded in the head with 3/8-18 threads, just like the other bolts holding the intake on. Instead of threaded rod, I would suggest getting automotive style studs from the auto parts store (I used Dorman brand), as they are stonger than the threaded rod that's generally available.
