A pump wouldn't suck the old goo out, so the cover had to come off. I'm sure the stuff inside was SAE 90 at some time in the last 56 years--more like 900 now--had to be spooned out!
Laugh if you will--but if it's been a while since you checked to see whats in your pumpkin, you might consider it.
