Howdy everyone. I have voluteered to assist Peggy with publishing the Tech Tips that have been submitted. As a part of the process I will be placing queries in the various forums looking for details and/or fact checking.
Today I'm looking for info on clutches and Bell Housings. A tip was submitted where the writer discussed installing a T-5 tranny. In his case he was adapting the transmission to replace a SM420. The bell housing and clutch he used were out of a 55 1st series, though he isn't sure if it was the orignal or had been swapped at some point. It had a 10 3/4 inch clutch with a 10 spline clutch disc.
What I'm trying to find out, is bell housing typical for AD trucks running the sm420? While I know that in earlier years the 10 3/4 clutch was only used on 1 tons (I think it had something to do with the torque tube design?)would later models use the 10 3/4 clutch as well?... Do lighter trucks with 9 or 10 in. disk still have the same 10 spline disk and bellhousing arrangments?
