the front lights are the "park" lights, the rears are "tail" lights .... when in what you're calling the "running light position" [the "parking light position" in our pre-running light era vehicles] the park AND tail lights are on - in the headlight [or "driving light"] position, the headlights and tail lights are on, the park lights [front] are not
