So, the gauge works now? But stays on all the time? You'll have to check the wiring diagram, but I believe the fuel gauge gets it's power from the switched lead on the ign switch- it gets connected to the same terminal that runs out to the coil.

The ammeter is always hot.

Perhaps double check the connections on the back of the ign switch.
