Make sure the puller screw gets all the way through the center of the balancer and pushes against the crankshaft snout. Sometimes it's necessary to slip a small-diameter deep socket into the center of the balancer so the puller jackscrew doesn't push against the hand crank ears on the balancer instead of the crankshaft. I've seen balancers and pullers broken by people who weren't paying attention to what they were doing.
