Welcome to the site. From the firewall, to the factory rag joint, there are steering column sections, that can be retro-fit, with a telescoping/collapsible feature, if you are concerned with the safety of your son. Also, since seatbelts were not mandatory, by the federal government, in trucks until 1966, you should invest in lap belts and/or shoulder belts for your son's safety, as well. This is a very common convenience/performance upgrade on these trucks.
