If you decide not to rebuild the transmission yourself, look for transmission shops in your area that have been in business for a long time. That is how I have found good shops in my area (two since the 50's, one since the 60's). In southern California, a rebuild cost $200 to $300 which includes the rebuild kit. Parts like gears cost extra and may take time to find. If your transmission is in very bad shape, it may be cheaper to find a good used one where the seller knows the condition.
