a very common problem - too much of that "cutting the corners" - you need to open up the box on the lower column, clean it out well, notice the way it's supposed to work, examine the positioning of the forks [adjusted with the end fitting on the rods to the trans], see if the corners of the forks or the pawl are too rounded off, fix as needed, regrease and reassemble
