The end of the adjuster screw is engaged into a slot on the gear. In order to remove the cover, the locknut would have to be completely removed, then the adjuster screw tightened all of the way in and then some in order to remove the cover. Best would be to remove the box and disassemble on the bench if you really need to get into it.
