EDIT: I just noticed that your truck is a '59. I believe that it has different hood springs that AD trucks. If so, disregard my answer below ...

The hood of my buddy's '53 F-100 panel requires a "wood prop", too. He believes that the hood spring were installed a half-turn too loose after the restoration. Don't know if that is right, or if it is applicable to your Chevy. The F-100 spring and the AD spring are similar. I think that his hood springs are new reproductions. He hasn't attemped a repair yet.
