The overdrive governor on the transmission prevents o/d from working below 28 mph. Once above 28 mph, the governor allows overdrive to engage if the T handle cable is pushed in to disengage the manual lock out function. Above 28 mph the kick down switch allows you to have o/d when you want it. Another way to have o/d when you want it is to keep a slight amount of pressure on the gas pedal. The o/d will not engage when you keep a little pressure on the gas pedal, even when above 28 mph and the T handle is pushed in. Just keep that little pressure on the pedal until you reach the speed you want o/d and then let off the gas pedal to shift into o/d. With a little practice, you can even shift from 2nd to 3rd gear with a little pedal pressure and not engage o/d until you want it. I use gas pedal pressure all the time to have o/d when I want it. Make sure your kick down switch is adjusted just right to allow easy kick down. With a little practice using the T handle, it becomes easy to use the lock out cable to engage and disengage o/d. Keep pressure off the drive line (not accelerating or decelerating)and it is easy to push the handle in and engage o/d. Press the gas pedal to the floor to have accelerating pressure and it is easy to pull the handle out to prevent o/d from engaging. I know some people who never practice using the various methods described above and never get the full control and benefits of the o/d. One time, I did put a small on/off button on my column shift where I could reach it with my thumb, when my hand was on the plastic knob. I wired it to the governor so I could ground the circuit at anytime and engage o/d. I even had o/d in 1st gear - wow - fun! But there is a big downside. The o/d will not rotate in reverse. If you forget to push the button before you park (leaving the o/d engaged)you will back up a little way and then boom! the o/d locks up and stops you immediately. Doesn't take much of that to ruin the o/d. It was tons of fun for a couple of years but I switched back to the factory controls after that o/d was ruined.
