That sounds like a good combination. When axles and differentials start to break, is when the traction is increases because of the addition of wider, stickier tires.
I never thought of using fenderwell headers because I live in an area where there is lots of rain in the winter and I didn't think the headers would last. I don't recall seeing any stainless headers being offered in the 70's. It wasn't a major problem cutting and welding the pipes for the 3rd and 4th cylinders because there is plenty of room to do a neat job. There is lots of room for the big block in the 55 to 59 engine compartment.
