Greg_H, I didn't rotate the shaft fully 180° after the first try, but I did rotate it a few degrees, then a few more. Each time I got the same result. The shaft will stop with a thud with about 5/8 of an inch to go..so neither the hanger bearing nor the rear u-joint will line up where they need to be. Is there any possibility that the splines have only one position that will mate properly with the transmission?
