I agree with everyone else regarding the die grinder and 1/32 cut-off wheels. It's the best way. I would cut on the fender side not the cowl side. The cut is going to remove material and it may be uneven since it is free-hand.
Good luck, go slow and steady. I would recommend a few pactice runs through some 18-gauge sheet metal to get the feel.
