That might have been a bum lead on my part. Even if severely advanced, the intake would be closed and the piston would be coming up on compression. Excess advance will show itself by bumping the engine backwards as it fires WAY to early and drives the piston back down..against normal rotation.

A compression test will let you see what is going on inside the engine...this would be the first order of business.
