Big rigs use both full flow and bypass filters for best protection.
Full flow filters only trap the 'larger' particles (20-40 microns and larger) to keep the oil flowing without pressure loss.
These filter systems require a bypass valve either on the filter or engine.
Prevents starving from lack of oil, when the filter gets clogged.
Bypass/remote filters take care of all the very small particles, the full flow filter ignores.
Takes only a few minutes for the entire oil to pass through the filter.
Oil flow is tapped and metered by a small hole at the output, hence the 10-20% amount of flow through it.
Best remote filter is the Frantz system using toilet paper as the element, trapping particles as small as 1 micron !
In business since the 50s with the exact same product.
My new 261 will use the full flow and Frantz filter, for longest engine life.
Even if you change your oil very often - I would recommend to always use clean filters and detergent oil with sufficient zinc content.
While you are at it - tap into the air cleaner bottom as the crankcase breather filter and use a closed valve cover.
The very common breather caps with foam are not very efficient and contaminate clean oil quickly.
The early slotted valve covers give zero protection.
