I've seen it done, and done it myself two ways depending on the job. One way is basically the way you describe and outlined here. The other is to paint the first color without masking the edge, painting slightly past the color break, then mask and shoot the second color. If you do it the second way be sure to shoot the lighter color first. It's easier to cover light paint with dark than the other way around.
