The most commonly used fuel filter was a diecast aluminum piece with a fine-mesh screen and a glass sediment bowl, sometimes with a ceramic insert, that was installed at the carburetor inlet. Some fuel pumps had a similar setup incorporated into the pump assembly.

They're pretty commonly found on the auction sites. I'd post a pic, but links to them last about 30 seconds on average around here, for some reason.
