The run/don't run discussion on hydraulic lifters has been going on since at least 1949 when Buick installed hydraulic lifters in their straight 8 engines. With a 50+ year running discussion, we're not likely to come up with a definitive answer in an internet chat room. The Lincoln Zephyr V-12's had hydraulics as early as the late 1930's, but there was no question about them- - - -the valve stem length determined the lifter preload and it was only changed during a valve job by grinding the length of the stem to alter the preload. That's still the best way to handle lifter assembly height on engines without adjusting screws or adjustable rocker ball pivots. Some engines have different-length pushrods available.

I'm a member of the "don't run" camp. I've explained the "companion cylinder" valve adjustment procedure several times, so an archive search should bring that one up if anyone's interested. It works on all engines, with solid or hydraulic lifters.
