Not sure if it was the correct thing to do, however I went to the hobby shop and found a good florescent color that closely matched and used that when I painted my needles. Unless I am looking at the wrong bottle, what I used was called florescent hot pink.
Then just protected my gauge face and painted the needle with a small brush.
By the way, even if you use only water, if you scrub your gauges too hard you will go through the paint. So be careful.
