I'm not real sure where to post this, but since my ultimate goal is to get it ready for painting I'll try it here, but if someone wants to move it I'll understand.
I have my front axle off ('53 3/4ton chevy truck). I removed the steering from the side of the steering gear box with a pitman puller but other than that everything attached to the front axle is still connected (steering arm, tie rods, etc).
My question is, what is the best way to strip this a bit in order to paint the axle? I've got my book and I'm sure I could figure out how to take it all off in pieces but I'm not sure I should. If any of it is going to need to be replaced I will replace it, but one old mechanic already told me I'd be better off waiting to do the kingpins until I put the axle back on. I'm afraid if I start knocking the little ball joints (not too sure what else to call them) apart to remove the steering rod, tie rods and steering linkage rods apart that I'm going to just make alot more work for myself. But then again I'm using por-15 so I don't want to put it on something that is going to make it hard to get apart later (exposed threads maybe?).
Any tips would be appreciated.
