No reason to disconnect the battery to pull the knob and shaft out. The shaft is guided by at the front and center so it has to go straight into the insulsted Bakelite sliding block. The only way the shaft is ever gonna come out is if you hold the button in till the end of the shaft clears the detent, which is clearly shown in the pictures.
And yes, of course common sense applies when you get to removing the switch and wires, you surly don't want power to it.
