Gman, that's a bummer!
As i've said before laminated glass is much less forgiving than tempered,although I realise your windshields have to be laminated by law.
It sounds like your screws are a little too long (I assume they are the correct ones),alternatively it's possible the glass is a touch too big.
(Did you buy it pre-cut from a vendor,or did you have them cut locally?)
Quite often glass cut for frames has small clearance cuts made at frame joints to clear brackets and/or screws.
Any screws etc should be able to be snugged down without fear of cracking the glass.
I'm not entirely sure about the 'anatomy' of 46 frames so these reasons may not apply in your circumstance.
My knowledge is based on British vehicles from a similar era.
It might be worth looking into though.
