I've read a few articles on the subject, and most people have gotten safely away with using a 12V to jump. The best method I've read about it is grounding (using correct polarity) to the frame, and touching the 12V lead directly to the starter connection in the engine bay. Don't spend too long sending 12V through a 6V system as something will eventually smoke.
