I don't know about the earlier series, but the 55-59 hood hinges can stand proud of the cowl because the pins in the hinges are worn - not a problem until you take things apart and disturb [clean] the crud and corrosion build up and lube them up nice .... new springs on old hinges worsen the problem, new hinges with the original or new springs fix it right up
