When it dies, pull the gas cap quickly. If you get a big sucking noise, you've got a plugged vent line to the tank. I had a similar problem on a 47 Mercury about 45 years ago, and it turned out to be a big grasshopper wedged into the pickup line inside the fuel tank. The car would run about a mile, then stall and refuse to restsart for 30 minutes or so.
