My Name is Chris Gardner from Greenville SC. This is my daily driver; actually it’s my only driver. I plan to keep it all original. The wood bed is still under the steel plate. Some of it has rotted so that will be replaced. I have to repaint the interior. And I think I will at some point pull the engine, reseal it, paint it and clean up the engine compartment. I mostly plan on driving it every day.
I acquired this truck for an undisclosed amount - let’s just say I got a steal of deal.
I work for a Chevy dealer in Greenville SC (Kevin Whitaker Chevrolet) He has a small collection of old muscle cars and antiques, and is known in the area for having restored and original older cars displayed in the showroom.
One particular Friday afternoon I came into the service department and there it was. This 1964 C10 Short Bed, I was instantly hooked and knew I had to have it. I knew she was most likely going to be restored, and sent off somewhere and wouldn’t be seen again. I asked Kevin about it and he told me the story on this truck.
It was purchased in December 1963 at Kellet Chevrolet in Fountain Inn SC. The owner used it for various jobs around Greenville. As time passed the original owner passed away but the truck stayed in his family. The Son of the original owner had let his son (The Grandson) take over it for a short time that’s where I believe the minor changes (valve cover, breather so I thought) took place. Well some time went by and the decision was made to trade her in on a new Chevy truck for the Son. This is where our paths meet. I wanted her so bad. “I wanted this for a daily driver. A month went by and the truck she was mine.
I have the Original bill of sale, the Original Warranty Book, Owner’s Manual, and the plastic folder it came in.
I recently purchased a 63 283 so I could use the valve covers and Breather.
Last week I was trying to install the original script valve covers and found a problem with the “Original 283”. There seemed to be acc holes in the heads??? I didn’t think a 283 had such holes. I wanted this thing so bad I didn’t even notice that the original 283 had been changed. I checked the casting numbers and found the engine to be a 1979-80 350. Good thing I got that old 283.
