Yes, you are probably right there...except my understanding was that this truck was bought new in Eugene, Oregon. Hmmm...but yes, my silly mistake...this number is stamped not cast, right on the flat area behind the dist.. I will clean it up a bit better and look again.

The original engine serial number would have been stamped, not cast in that same location. A replacement engine would have had no serial number, allowing the engine/block to be stamped when used as a replacement in a state that registered (and/or titled) a truck using the engine serial number.
GMONIZ's suggestions seems very reasonable.
What is the ID on your title/registration (it could be an engine ID/serial-number or the vehicle/cab ID/serial-number)?
