The bellhousing is bolted to the crossmember, not the transmission. Remove the starter and exhaust pipes, the radiator, and whatever wiring is attached to the engine. Remove 5 or 6 bolts where the engine and the bellhousing join, and lift it out. The trans will stay in place with maybe a little support back by the driveshaft with a bottle jack. I could pull the V-8 engine out of my 59 Burb without even pulling the hood- - - -it opened far enough to lift the engine out with no interference.
