Hy pipeliner78, I believe the cylinder is there to be an assist to the box alone, and to take the strain off of components that are maybe a bit too light to handle the load continuously without it. I thought you had access to a few of those trucks, can't you find a ram in better condition? I'll do some reading in the maintenance manual, but for now I would say don't use the system without the ram.
