Hmmmm- - - - -was the piston slap isolated to one cylinder, or was it a general noisy condition? The pistons might have been fitted loose enough to rattle, but the noise shouldn't have suddenly stopped. It sounds like it's going to need a teardown and some very careful clearance measurements. Once I wore out a set of rings in a single cross-country trip from California to Tennessee, simply because I didn't get the honing grit out of the cylinders sufficiently, and 2500 miles of highway driving completely wore the oil rings away. By the time I got to Nashville, it was burning 3 quarts of oil to every tank of gas! The engine was a 196 cubic inch Rambler American flathead six.
