Ah yes, that explains it. I haven’t owned or worked on a SBC engine since 1985. The one in that article that says “date code reads as 4-M-17 (1954, DECEMBER, 17TH DAY)
” is clearly for a V8 (1955 model year was released ‘54). I’ve still not seen any of the Stovebolts, even the later ones, that had tags on the distributors, if anyone has one I’d like to see a picture of it so I can add it to the reference file as confirmed.
Chev’s of the 40’s is generalizing in their catalog listing and may give the impression that all the distributors also had tags. Although the do make note; Exceptions may apply.
I think that listing in the Steiner catalog is doing the same thing although I‘m not into Farmall tractors so I don’t know if their distributors had tags. And if anyone thinks they are getting ripped off by the old truck vendors just look at the price the poor tractor guys are getting stiffed with from Steiner. The list a single tag for $13.50! Eckler gives you a set of all three in a package for lest than that.
