Push down hard and at the same time pull the lever as hard as you can, wiggle it if necessary. The mechanism is a very simple release, you push the lever to the side and the cone shaped plunger is released. The slide latch goes around the plunger groove. Make sure you make the correct adjustments and grease the mechanism well before closing the hood again.
