The same thing happened to me on my '48. A lot of money later for new wires and a new gauge, no more smoke. I THINK the gauge was grounding out. On the new one I made sure it wasn't by using electrical tape to isolte the gauge from the gauge next to it.

My new gas gauge doesn't work, though....
