if you have the original 283V8 front peg style mounts, then yes, you need to change to the side mounts, but most folks do that anyway on non-stock V8 installs - also you hafta actually notch or remove the original rear crossmember for a modern auto trans to fit without problems
I looked at putting a NP A833 4spd with the heavy iron case in a TF with the front mounts, and figured it would work to fab up a thin sheet steel piece to put between the bellhouse and block that had ears to replace the mounts on the old bellhouse ... might work with an auto too, but I'm not sure how adding that 1/4" space would affect things
