Having done several of these modifications I'd like to make a couple suggestions that will make this less stressful.
First of all, when you remove the tailshaft from the S10 transmission be careful to observe the orientation of the plastic oiling funnel that lubes the 5th gear assembly. There will be a thin race of bearings that fit into a recess in the S10 tailshaft and you need to make sure you use a little grease to hold the bearing race in place when you button up the S10 tailshaft to the Camaro box.
Placement of the speedo gear is outlined in the tech tip and you'll need to purchase a cobalt drill bit in the proper size to drill the shallow hole for the clip to lock into. I think my bit was about $8.00....got it from a local machine shop and it was worth every penny. With the cobalt bit the mainshaft drills like it was butter with a hand-held battery powered drill. I used a grinder to flatten a spot on the shaft where I wanted the hole. Also, I used JB weld to secure the shim to the mainshaft.
While you've got the tailshaft off the S10, check out the condition of the end bushing. It sits just in front of the slip yoke seal. It takes a special little tool to remove and reinstall the bushing while the tailshaft is installed. I had a tough time trying to get a new bushing until I checked with AutoZone for the new rear seal.....the seal AND bushing kit are available from Timken #5200 for $8.00.
I'm running Royal Purple Synchromax in my Hybrid box (NWC with brass synchronizers) but I've run gear oil (85-140) in my brass synchronizer NWC 1352-145 brass synchro S10 box in my 54 truck for the past 13,000 miles with NO SHIFTING OR NOISE issues. I also have a Camaro BW T5 "Z" box that has always run gear oil.
This actual road experience has me thoroughly convinced that you MUST run ATF or an oil like RP Synchromax in your world class box. In addition, you can run gear oil in your NWC brass synchro box if you do most of your driving in a warmer climate or ATF...fortified with a shot of Lucas Stabilizer if you insist on running ATF in a NWC box.
You mentioned balance.....which is not an issue in making the modification to the Camaro box. BTW....the S10 SHORTBED driveshaft is almost a perfect fit in the AD truck....don't know which diff you're running but the slip yoke and terminal end will match up with most GM diffs. A slip yoke sells for $75.00 by itself and I can pick up the complete Shortbed driveshafts for $10.00......makes using the salvage yard shaft a real bargain!!
I have some pics of the hybrid modification in my 40 streetrod webshots album. Hope this helps.
Dave
