Back in the 1950's, practically all of them I worked on had the high-voltage terminal pointed down. Dunno if it had any real effect, but it supposedly kept condensation or puddle splash from accumulating in the high voltage tower and drowning out the ignition. If they could have turned the distributor upside down too, it would have been a lot more believable.
