The short shaft water pump was the way they were done before the adapter was invented. I have run several trucks that way. However, I have heard nothing but good about the adapter and if I had it to do again that's the way I'd go.

If you do go the short shaft route you can shorten it yourself and use a Ford 292 pulley. The asking price for a shortened one is ridiculous.
