Ive seen some of the oldtimers Ive worked with do this; it makes it a little thinner so it spreadfs smoother on a big area, but it can be a bear to sand if put on too thick!( it gets harder and a little more brittle!) There is a product out called Mudhoney I think by Evercoat? that does the same thing, almost like a thinner for fillers.
