If the battery ever gets low enough that the cranking speed drops, the starter will begin to draw massive amounts of current and damage the circuits inside it, so never keep grinding on a starter until it won't turn any more, or turns very slowly. A properly-tuned stovebolt engine with 12 volts against a 6V starter should start within 2-3 seconds of starter operation every time. The starter will last for many years under those circumstances.
