Remember the Clutch-Flite? It was a combination of the Torqueflite automatic with a manual clutch. Then somebody came out with the idea of a "slippy" clutch with 2 or 3 discs, steel separator plates, inertial wweights on the pressure plate arms, and a calibrated-leakdown hydraulic slave cylinder that released the throwout bearing gradually. A driver could rev the engine to whatever launch RPM he wanted, and hold it there while the clutch did all the work. Just another reason I preferred dirt roundtracks to drag racing- - - -lots more emphasis on driving ability than technology gimmicks!
