I didn't. I put something soft like a towel between the wood and the cab to prevent scratching. I used two 2-by-8 boards. I had to lift a little, then re-adjust a few times before finding the center point. After I was satisfied with the balancing, I lifted and pushed it over the frame. Take the step rail OFF. when its balancing on the engine hoist, you are not going to want to waste to much time, just because all the hard work is up in the air. I realized that the engine hoist won't roll far enough under the frame with the side step on. It did do some wobbling and if a 2nd person is available it would help to prevent that. There was no sliding on the wood though. But I would go with 8 inch wide wood at least. When I took the cab off, I used one board and it worked, but the board did some bending and made me nervous. It took be a little over an hour to put it on by myself.
