That isn't the number you use. There should be an engine number stamped on a pad behind the distributor It will start with a letter then the next three numbers tell the size of the engine.

On the other side of the block there will be a 7 digit number cast into the block. With that you can find more info on the block.

The number you posted shows the date it was cast. H means August, 9 is the day and 4 is the year. Probably '54 but it might possibly be a '44. That 3 digit code on the engine number will clue us in.
