We've been here before but this ole girl (57 3100) is still giving me fits. What are your thoughts?
What I have: 235 newly rebuilt .030 over with stock parts. Offy 2x intake. Fentons with dual exhaust and Flowmaster 40's. Langdon's HEI distributor. New wiring harness. Alternator. All parts are new.
Problem: The truck will start and run ok; although it's running rich. I have the timing on the mark and I've tried to adjust the air/fuel mixture but I'm not getting much variation on the vacuum guage. It's at about 14" right now and that's the best I can get. (I've RTV'd all the gaskets to prevent vacuum leaks, but...) The truck will run all day in the garage but if I take it out and put it under load, it will die. It acts like it's starving for fuel. However, my tank is full and my settlement bowl are full. Funny thing is that I can't see or hear fuel spraying in the carbs when this happens. After a short time (5-10 minutes) I can start the truck and the cycle repeats itself. However, it gets harder and harder to start over time. The chokes are wide open.
My exhaust tips are covered with dried gas. Sometimes when I start it, she bucks and pops like it's all carboned up.
What have I done? Someone suggested the problem is in the coil pickup in the distributor so I replaced it. No difference. I had the control module checked and it was ok. I replaced it anyway. I was running a water line along the fuel line at the top of the engine for heating the intake. I was afraid that was creating a vapor lock so I relocated it. Nothing has changed.
What are your thoughts?
