Another thing it COULD be is loosening tolerances in the main and connecting rod bearings. If the pick up screen looks to be clear, then I would start making plans for a rebuild.
The reason I'm suspicious is because I don't know why there would be a bunch of foreign material and crud in the oil pan...unless you never change the oil.
