Another option for hotrodding an old truck, would be get a different truck. Starting in the mid-60's Chevy started to have more of a modern suspension on the trucks. My brother has a 66' and it has coil springs all the way around and IFS. That's all stock. He installed disc's all around and has a 350 sbc that has bored out .060 over, with a Camaro 6-speed(Tremec? I think) behind it. He has towed with it and can certainly haul some butt in it aswell.

My point would be finding a different truck that has some of the good things for safety and speed already in it, is a viable option.
